Interesting photo from the past… Donnie Sutherland was from Embo and has older brother Jimmie, now in Vancouver, Canada, and sisters Isobel and Nan. Peter Swanson was from Embo Farm and was one of several Swanson children that went to Embo primary school with me. Joe MacDonald was also from Embo and had older brothers Maki and Geordie. I believe that Joe later went to the Golspie Tech and served as an engineer at Douneray nuclear establishment in Caithness and later moved to England. Alistair Ross was from Embo and was the younger brother of the late Davie Ross who spent his working life in the USA marines and later the Colorado police. In the late 1950s Alistair worked in Glasgow where he was a member of the Embo “clan†living there. The last time I saw Alistair was on the 20 December 1961 at the Glasgow rail station when he with other Embo exiles “saw me off on the train†when I left for Southampton to catch the Union Castle’s Caernarvon Castle for Cape Town to later travel to the then Rhodesia. Alistair later served in the London Metropolitan Police. Una Fraser and Annabelle Watt were also from Embo. Una’s elder sister Anna Catherine Fraser married my eldest brother Donald James Mackay in Rhodesia and I spent many years with them there when I was serving as a Policeman in the British South Africa Police. Una’s brother Tommy spent his work life in New Zealand. Annabelle has sisters Jenny and Eileen and she is married and living near London.
I suspect that the photo was taken in about 1954, as in 1950 the persons I mentioned were still at least two years away from finishing their primary education at Embo School. Comment left on 14 May 2016 at 20:14 by Kenneth Mackay
