Sutherland Highland Rifle Volunteers shooting medal - Robert Mackay 1899
Ornate and heavy silver medal (a) in the shape of a Maltese cross with foliage decoration between the arms and above. In the centre is a circular plaque with the Sutherland crest in the centre and the words 1ST SUTHERLAND HRV B Co round the edge. The reverse is engraved Presented by CAPTAIN HM MACKAY for best score in Class Firing Trained Volunteers 1899 WON BY Col Sergt MACKAY. Stamped with the maker's mark J.G and hallmarks lion, z, anchor (Birmingham 1899/1900).
The medal has a ring at the top which fits over a hook in the presentation box (b), which is covered in dark brown paper with a gold border stamped on the top. The base of the box is lined with maroon velvet and the lid with pale red silk. The lining of the lid is loose.
