Two Ontario mining medallions
Two medallions, one silver coloured, one gold coloured, in a presentation box with velour covered base with cutouts for the medallions and a white lid stamped Province of Ontario in gold. Apart from the colour, the two medallions are identical in appearance. On one side is the Ontario crest of rampant moose with bear and maple leaves, with the wording 1867 CONFEDERATION 1967 ONTARIO round the outside. On the other is a miner holding a drill in heroic style with mine buildings in the background and the words CONTAINING GOLD NICKEL ZINC PLATINUM SILVER COPPER IRON MINED IN ONTARIO. Round the outside are the words MINTED BY THE ONTARIO GOVERNMENT TO COMMEMORATE THE ROLE OF MINING IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF CANADA.
These were given to the museum with the Robert Mackay (d.1931) collection. The assumption is that they were presented to the town council and got mixed up with the Robert Mackay items.
