Imperial Service Medal awarded to James Alexander Matheson Ross
Imperial Service Medal awarded to postman, James Alexander Matheson Ross.
Details of his life as provided by the donor:
"James Alexander Matheson Ross 3 May 1908-7 December 1981.
Jim, as he was known, was born at Achinchanter, son of John Matheson Ross and Robina Murray, who were married on 1st February, 1899. John was a ploughman and their four children were born at Proncy, Davochfin, Proncy Mains and Achinchanter.
When John died in 1921, the family moved from Hilton, Embo to Golspie.
Jim was a telegraph messenger from 1924-1928 and a postman at Golspie Post Office from 1928-1937. His postal round for most of this time was Skelbo.
Jim married Harriette Campbell Ross on 12 July 1937. She was the daughter of Donald Ross, watchmaker, Tain and Marion Baillie, Golspie. The young couple moved to Rosehall and Jim remained a postman there for 32 years.
The Rosehall postal route was a very large rural one. From the outskirts of Bonar Bridge to the furthest croft, 12 miles up Glen Cassley. This route was often very hazardous in winter conditions. Unsuitable for war service due to a leg injury, Jim was a great support to the community at this time and indeed for all of his working life.
After his retirement, he enjoyed gardening and also was a Red Cross hospital car driver, ferrying patients to local surgeries and hospitals in Golspie and Inverness.
He was proud of the Imperial Service Medal, awarded for his long service in the GPO."
