Life and Times of J E D Bethune of Calcutta
Talk by Manish Basu to Dornoch Heritage Society on 20th November 2008 entitled 'Life and Times of J E D Bethune of Calcutta' transcribed from an original mini-disc recording.
In the opening part of his talk Manish draws attention to the contribution of the Lunar Society to the development of Britain in the nineteenth century. The Society was formed in 1865 by Erasmus Darwin, son of Charles Darwin, as a Dining Club for 'people with brains' coming together on days of a full moon, hence the 'Lunar Society'. The Society ceased to exist in 1913 but was reformed in 1980 by Rachael Waterhouse and Manish considered himself to be honoured and privileged to become a member at this time. The connections of the Society in the 19th century led to John Bethune's move to India.
