Two Bibles, a Bible Dictionary and a Commentary such as might be found in many homes in Scotland in the period. The shelf size of the group is significant: width 330mm x height 330mm x depth 270mm. The first publication is (1) John Brown's "Self-Interpreting Bible" in 2 volumes, illustrated with monochrome engravings, bound in blue leather with blind embossed covers, gilt titles and decoration on the spine. A late nineteenth century edition. 'Family Register' pages at the start contain no entries. (2) John Brown's "Dictionary of the Bible", a new edition edited by his son Dr William Brown with additional contributions by the Rev Professor J. Eadie. Illustrated, bound in blue cloth boards with quarter blue leather, gilt title on the spine. c.1850. A holograph inscription inside the front board in ink reads "Alexander Matheson, Shoe Maker, Badninish." and beneath it a pencil inscription "Hamish Matheson." Both above published by William Mackenzie, Glasgow. (3) "The Holy Bible with Marginal Readings and Parallel References and the Commentaries of (Matthew) Henry and (Thomas) Scott condensed, with a series of illustrations in Chromo-Lithography", published by John M'Gready, Glasgow. The bound leather covered boards with embossed panel and gilt titles with brass corners and clasps lacks the spine, the front board badly scratched. (4) Volumes II, "Job to Malachi" and III "Matthew to Revelation" of Matthew Henry's "Commentary on the Old and New Testaments, A New and Illustrated Edition with Additional Notes etc. together with a Life of the Author." Bound in green embossed boards with gilt titles on the spine. Published by Cassell Petter and Galpin, London.
