A pair of carpet beaters, which belonged to the Morrison family of Golspie and the Grant family of Dornoch, constructed from twisted steel cable with the strands opened out to form floral shape heads. Prior to the age of fitted household carpets and vacuum cleaners, carpet beaters were an essential domestic item. On a regular basis loose rugs and carpets were hung on washing or other available stout lines with vigorous thrashing to remove ingrained dust. The beater with the wooden handle is 55cm long with the widest part of the wire head 16cm wide; the beater with the metal handle is shorter, 44cm long with the wire head 17cm wide.
Dimensions: Length 700mm - Width 400mm
