Theodolite or Surveyor's Level

Date Added: 09 January 2020 Year: 1936 Institution Name: dnhhl Cat No: | 2019_063_03 | Picture No: 14249

Leather or pigskin case lined with plum velvet and fastening with a belt, with the ink inscription ''Geo: [sic] Calder. Dornoch''. Also inscribed in four places in ink, two on each side, are the more or less indistinct signatures of the donor Brian Munro.

Contents one surveying instrument of blackened and lacquered brass inscribed ''STANLEY, LONDON''. Brass socket to fit instrument to surveyor's tripod, the ball-joint of the socket providing angular movement (possibly accidental to the purpose) and a knurled wheel providing rotational movement.

There is a spirit-level mounted on the upper side of the instrument which, by means of a prism, is superimposed on the image produced by the slide-focusing objective lens when the observer looks through the eye-piece. There is no means of determining angle apparent to the layman, merely whether or not the image is plane with the instrument, which leads me to believe it is in fact a surveyor's level.
