Extract from '100 Years Ago' in the Northern Times of 3 July 2019 concerning the application by Mr Roderick Mackenzie, ferryman at Meikleferry for an increase of salary with the raising of the ferry dues. The road surveyor's report was to the effect that Mr Mackenzie was a good reliable man and his income amounted to £106 per annum with £36 paid by the County Council with the remaining £70 being derived from the ferry dues. Out of that sum the ferryman had to pay his assistant 26s per week. The men had to be on duty 16 hours per day and very few cattle were being ferried, sheep was the chief sources of revenue. After discussion members of the Sutherland Road Board agreed that fares under 1s should be increase by 50 per cent and that the price for stock ferried should be increase by 100 per cent. It was also agreed to increase the ferryman's salary by 50 per cent.
