Memorial Stone gets makeover
Extract from the Northern Times of April 19, 2019 with a report of a successful bid for funding enabling Historylinks Museum to restore an important landmark with the repair of the memorial stone to Sheriff Hugh McCulloch which has fallen into disrepair over a number of years. The remaining family of the Sheriff have also contributed to the project costs.
Sheriff McCulloch was a much loved and greatly respected member of the Dornoch community and was drowned in the Meikle Ferry disaster in August 1809 when an overloaded ferry taking people to Tain Fair capsized with the loss of 90 men, women and children. The memorial to him was erected by local inhabitants some 100 years later and it is sited where he give his sermons in fields just outside Dornoch. Historylinks Museum became a working partner with Dornoch Academy and it was decided to undertake the restoration alongside young people from the school who are involved in the Rural Skills Programme. An attractive interpretation board is being designed to be site adjacent to the memorial. The article is accompanied by a colour photograph showing Youth Leader D H MacLeod, volunteer David Mahoney and two of the helpers from Dornoch Academy at work at the memorial site.
