Domestic chiming clock of typical 1930's design
A chiming clock of typical 1930's design, in common use in households, usually positioned on the mantle shelf above a fireplace or on sideboards. This example bears a silver. hallmarked plate below the clock face inscribed "Presented to Sgt Ross 5th Seaforth Highlanders as a token of respect and gratitude From The Cookhouse Staff 11/11/39". [Sgt Ross is shown in a photograph at picture #13823] The wooden case is of veneered soft wood with a large arched hinged door at the rear giving access to the clock mechanism and coiled chime. The mechanism bears a makers motive of a pine tree outline above encircled letters U W S. The pendulum is a formed from a 4 cm brass enclosed weight with a screw thread at its base for length adjustment. The hinged glass of the clock face permits access to two round apertures permitting winding of the springs for the clock and chime mechanism. The winged key is enclosed within the rear casing.
