Grant Family Bible c1850
Large black leather bound family bible embossed with originally gold lettering ( now faded) and brass bound corners with cross cut-outs. The brass corners form part of a securing system with 40mm x 70mm brass plates hinged on the rear cover and engaging with studs (lower corner missing) on front cover. There is a handwritten inscription on the first page "John Grant St Gilbert's Street, Dornoch Decr 1904" below which has been added "To Jessie Grant St Gilbert's Street, Dornoch From Pa". The Bible was printed by "William Collins, Sons & Co Glasgow, London & Edinburgh" and its artistic, colourful title page reads "The Holy Bible, with Marginal Readings and Parallel References and the Commentaries of Henry & Scott condensed wiht a series of illustrations in Chrome Lithography" Between the Old and New Testaments there is a 'Family Register' of four red bordered pages. The first 'Parents Names' has no entries but the second 'Childrens Names' has entries: "John Grant Born 18 ; Jessie M Sutherland Grant 18 ; Frances Grant born 1874 November First; Innes Grant born 1876 October Sixteenth; John Grant born 18 ; Charles Grant born 1882 February Twenty Eighth; Williamina Grant born 1885 June Thirtieth ; Robert Grant born 1888 July Twenty Sixth; Jessie M Sutherland Grant born 1893 December 25." The third, 'Marriages' page has the entries: "John Grant & Jessie M Sutherland married in the year 1874 19th of Feby; Frances Grant Anderson Proncy married in the year 1909 30th April; John Grant & Mary Morrison married in the year 1909 Feby." The final family page 'Deaths' has a single entry "John Grant The Deanery, died on the 28th April 1915 buried on the 30 April"
