Bakelite silhouette recognition Whitley bomber
A black bakelite model of a Whitley WW2 bomber, part of a series of models produced for Observer Corps and Armed Services silhouette reognition training. The aircraft type is embossed on the bottom of the aircraft fuselage.. The Armstrong Whitworth Whitley front line medium bomber was in service with the RAF at the outbreak of the Second World War. It was developed in the 1930s and participated in the first bombing raid upon German territory following the outbreak of the war. It remained in front line service until 1943 when it was surperseded by larger, four-engined bombers such as the Avro Lancaster. It was important that the Observer Corps and Armed Forces were trained in recognition of allied aircarft as well as those of the enemy.
