
Movement Caithness & Sutherland Highland Regiment
An extract from 'Old Files' published in the Northern Times of June 14, 1917 with a report of a meeting in the Council Chambers Dornoch on Tuesday 12th June 1917 in connection with the new movement in Sutherland - the creation of the 1st Battalion Caithness and Sutherland Highland Volunteers Regiment. The Provost occupied the chair and commended the objective following which the Town Clerk read the conditions of service and explained the regulations. Following speeches heartily favouring the new movement, "a goodly number attested and the oath of allegiance was administered by Sheriff Campbell, one of the deputy lieutenants for the county of Sutherland. The 25 enrolment papers available "were quickly used up" with a further opportunity of enrolment to take place the following Tuesday.
