Monochrome photograph of a group of 6 men with felled tree cut into logs in Deans Lane, Dornoch. The men were employed by a contractor Mr Murray, father of Isobel Davidson the donor of the copy of the photograph, the original of which has a fold mark at the centre of the right-hand side.

Took me ages to figure out where this was, don't get to Dornoch much these days. This is the lane going down to the garage which burnt down in the early '50s. Elmbank gable on the left, Alan MacKenzie the blacksmith built a house just over the wall on the right. The chimney between Elmbank and Burghfield is the end of Cairnie's bakery, now the Spar. The house with the 3 dormer windows is Assynt on St. Gilbert Street and the white gable end is what was Pete Grant's grocers shop, now the Post Office I believe. The chimney on the far right is the building that Shona and Willie Mackay turned into a hairdressers' shop.

Many thanks for your comments. The building that housed the Post Office is now a charity shop in aid of Highland Hospice, the Post Office is now located in Mitchells Chemist, formerly R.R. Johnstone.
