Female Dancing Costume in Clan Ranald Tartan
Female Dancing Costume originally donated to the Dornoch charity shop. (unknown donor). It comprises: Hat, Jacket, Kilt, Plaid, Sporran and Shoes. ( The shoes are at 2016.004). The kilt and plaid are woollen cloth, woven in the Macdonald of Clan Ranald Tartan. The kilt is 610mm (24'') in length from waist to hem, and has a cloth label sewn inside the waist which reads " R.G. Lawrie Ltd. / Highland Costume Specialists / The Highland House Glasgow / All wool / Made in Scotland". There is a loop of ribbon sewn inside the kilt 228mm (9'') from the hem to prevent excessive centrifugal movement when dancing. The plaid is 1194mm (47'') long by 1143mm (45'') wide, with fringing along the edges, and it is pleated onto a tie/fastening band at one end with a decorative pleated leaf-shaped fan of fabric at the other end. The Jacket and Hat are constructed from fully-lined black cotton velvet. The jacket is decorated with metalic braid and diamond-shaped white metal buttons bearing thistles. The cuffs are further enhanced with lace inserts. The hat is circular, 'beret' shaped, and has a toorie and a plume of black and white feathers. The sporran, hung from a leather and metal chain belt, has a leather base and is decorated with an engraved white metal purse clasp. This clasp is purely decorative, but there is a little pocket set into the leather at the back which is just big enough for a ticket or a few notes. The animal hair decorating the front is long and silky.
