The golfer wielding the club looks pretty expert - probably not a "gentleman golfer" but a top class professional. I'd guess the photo is either from the Braid v Vardon match in 1906 or the Arnaud Massy v Sandy Herd match in 1907. Between them these four won 13 Open Championships: Braid 5, Vardon 6 and the other two one each.
