August 1906, not 1910. Not a tournament but an exhibition match between James Braid and Harry Vardon, two of the then three greatest golfers in the world. The third member of this "Great Triumvirate" was J H Taylor, who was a regular visitor to Dornoch. It was probably he who persuaded his two famous rivals to come to Dornoch to play this match, to mark a major extension of the golf course. The figure kneeling to the left of the picture is not a third golfer - he's holding the flag, not a golf club. It's the great John Sutherland, who seems to have acted as referee for the match. A copy of this photo in John Macleod's history of the club states that the green they are playing on is the third.
