Dornoch volunteers in the Boer War
A collection of digital documents relating to the Dornoch volunteers who served in the Boer War, including copies of four of the five handwritten letters of Pte Alexander Murray kindly provided by Eileen Jeffries in Ontario. The complete story is given in an article which appeared in the Northern Times to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the volunteers departing from Dornoch to Fort George en route for service in the Boer War. Pte Alexander Murrary, of K Company "nd Battalion Sutherland Highlanders, had worked as a gardener and woodman at Dunrobin and Bonar Bridge wrote 5 letters to his sister Betsy's husband David, another of the clan Murray. It was in the byre of Betsy and David's son Willie that his daughter Betty (grand-daughter of Betsy and David) found the letters Alick, her great-uncle had written to her grandfather David. At the time the Northern Times article was written it was not possible to add names to the accompanying photograph of some of the Dornoch Volunteers, taken at Fort George prior to their departure. This collection provides a copy of that photograph and a further photograph of the soldiers in dress uniform, to which the majority of names have been added, including that of Alexander Murray.
