"DOING THE BARD PROUD!

Dornoch Heritage Society celebrated Robert Burns’ birthday in style last week, with an evening of music, poetry, good food and companionship in Dornoch Social Club.

Around sixty guests enjoyed an evening which went with a swing, thanks both to Peter Wild’s organisation and the knowledgeable patter of compere Robbie Rowantree! DHS members and their friends were royally entertained and fed, with young talent well to the fore.

The evening got off to a fine start with an opening set by the young fiddlers and accordionists of 'The Outskirters', a youthful group of musicians from Dornoch’s hinterland (hence their name!) under the guidance of their leader and mentor Tricia Andrews, and of Ebby Ritchie. Then came excellent traditional Burns Supper fare from Emma Mackay and her kitchen team - the haggis being piped in by Andrew Matheson and duly addressed – and stabbed with even more fervour than usual – by Brora’s Don Sutherland.

Interspersed with the generous courses of the traditional Burns-themed meal came great entertainment in music and the spoken word, with wide-ranging pieces featuring Jimmy Melville, Rebecca Grewcock, Elaine and Paul Griffiths, Ronnie Bruce, Donald Goskirk, Kisha Black, Janette Bremner and Judi Sutherland. Altogether this was a night to remember!
