Extract from the memorandum of Sergeant John Matheson who was born in 1772 in Craigkilisie in Strath Carnaig and spent the rest of his youth to the age of 12 or 13 in Rearquhar and then Brae. He then held jobs in various parts of Sutherland and Ross until he joined the Sutherland Fencibles in 1793. He served in the Fencibles for six years and then began a successful business career in Glasgow. The mememorandum provides fascinating details of the period to 1799 including details of livestock and transactions of his brother Hugh's estate at Brae.
