A year in the life of Dornoch's History
An article published in the 'Arts and Lifestyle' section of the Northern Times of Friday 10 January 2014, recording the first year anniversary of the launch of the Historylinks blog. The article includes a screen shot of the website and was published a year to the day of the launch of the blog, a collaborative venture by Historylinks Museum and the Centre for History at the University of the Highlands and Islands, to investigate the history and archaeology of places within a 30 mile radius of Dornoch. Dr Elizabeth Ritchie, a history lecturer at the University of the Highlands and Islands and a member of the Historylinks Museum committee, edits the blog and in addition to her own research and writing, she was successful in the first year in attracting 'posts' from researchers based in Aberdeen, Stirling, Dundee and Edinburgh. Several of her students on the Masters degree in Highlands and Islands history developed research on the local area and contributed their findings to the blog. With contribution for the Historylinks curator Sue Higgins, in the first year there was a total of 37 'posts', attracting 5031 'views' and visitors from 53 countries, predominantly the UK but also from Canada, Australia, USA, New Zealand and South Africa. The blog is complementary to the Historylinks web presence which has been progressively enhanced in the last few years, notably with the Historylinks Image Library launched in 2008, which by the end of 2013 held 11,483 images with descriptive detail, providing public access to the complete museum collection. The article concludes with reference to 2014 intentions to commemorate the centenary of the start of WW1, with additions to the museum website and, at corresponding time periods, the publication on the blog of extracts from the Capt Rose War Diary.
