And further to my previous comment on this photo I have found more information.
I found a clipping of the Northern Times from seventeen years ago about this photo which, according to the article, belonged to my cousin Helen MacDonald. I quote from it in full:
"One for the archives of its present owners, the Scottish Youth Hostels Association, this photograph shows some of the tradesmen who worked on the construction of Carbisdale Castle. The main structure behind them seems to be virtually complete and it's thought these men were joiners engaged on the interior woodwork, including the grand staircase. The castle was finished by 1917, so this picture may have been taken a year or two before. It belongs to Helen MacDonald, who works in the Tourist Information Centre in Dornoch. Her grandfather, John Sutherland, is first on the left in the front row and behind him on the left is his brother-in-law Ken MacKay, both from Dornoch. 'They did a lot of the fine woodwork inside the castle" said Helen. 'Later on specialist joiners were brought up from England and when they saw the quality of the work the local men had done, with the tools available, they were amazed.' Helen would be interested to hear if NT readers can identify anyone else in the photograph."

My great grandfather John Sutherland is seated (front row) at the end left. This photo shows him (a renowned joiner who was also involved in the houses built for WWI veterans in Bishopfield in the early 1920s) and other craftsmen working on the building (not refurbishment) of Carbisdale Castle in the years 1905-1917 (not 1830).
