Copy of a monochrome photograph of a soldier or officer in dress uniform with plaid. This photograph was in a collection of three belonging to the grandfather of the donor Rhona Petrieuk, who served with the Gordon Highlanders from approximately 1896 until 1914 when he was wounded in action.

Surely the Seaforths wore the McKENZIE tartan, except the 4/5 who wore the Sutherland tartan similar to the Black Watch tartan neither of which are on this photograph, looks more like the Gordon tartan with the yellow lines

The 4/5th was a composite battalion formed between the world wars from the 4th Ross-shire and 5th Sutherland and Caithness Territotial companies. The Ross-shire companies wore the mackenzie kilt and stag's head badge of the regular regiment - the same uniform as worn in the photograph. The 5th Bn 1908-1920 and 1939-1947 wore Government tartan the same as The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and Black Watch, based as it was on the C19th uniform of the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders.
I don't think I made it clear in my first post that the yellow stripe of the Gordon kilt would not show up in a photograph of this age, it would show as black which would make a Gordon Highlanders kilt look like a Government tartan kilt.
The tartan, badge and hose all clearly show the man in the photograph is a pre-war Seaforth Highlander, and a bandsman to boot with his white tunic and red cuffs, collar and shoulder straps. Comment left on 27 November 2013 at 14:07 by Adam Brown
