It was very interesting for me to see Dr Aeneas MacLeod's medical equipment. In late December 1946 I, as a six year old, took very ill with severe stomach pains and Dr MacLeod attended at our home at Springwell Cottage which was just seaward of Embo School. Dr MacLeod diagnosed my illness as a "burst appendix" and gave out that there was no time to wait for the ambulance from the Lawson Memorial Hospital in Golspie. He then bundled me onto the back seat of his car and covered me with a blanket and drove me to the hospital along with my mother. It was snowing very heavily at the time and the journey was difficult and dangerous. On our arrival at the hospital I was attended to by Dr Simpson. However, by then I was suffering badly from peritonitis and I was later told that it was touch and go as to whether I was going to recover. I did however recover well but that was after a three week stay in hospital. I shared a ward with a Kenneth MacKenzie from the West Coast who was about the same age as I was. We had great times there being spoiled by all the nurses in the hospital. I also remember that Isa Aiken from Coull Farm, Embo was also in hospital at the same time as I was. She too had her appendix removed. Isa was in the same class as I in Embo School where our class teacher was Mrs Bremner.
I have all my life remembered, and told of, the kindness and efficiency of Dr MacLeod...and he at no time displayed the negative and condescending attitude that many Dornoch residents then had towards what they disparagingly called "Embo Fishers".

I am currently researching my family tree & have established that Dr Aneas MacLeod is my great-aunt's husband. As there is no-one I can ask in my immediate family are you able to tell me if Dr John is still around as I would love to get in touch. Thank you
