Monochrome photograph of Meikle Ferry site during World War 2, a base of RAF Air Sea Rescue. The photograph is cracked with two corners missing. This copy was annotated by George Henry England who served there from 31 Dec 44 to 01 Jan 46. with details relating to the Air Sea Rescue base buildings. The prominent building with chimney stack was used as a boat repair shed and to its right is 'Pinnace 261' the craft used for air sea rescue. On the camera side of the Repair Shed, on or adjacent, to the roadway is 'Pinnace 189' and the hulk, low in the water on the right of the photograph is the dry dock barge. [see also picture #12260]

Do,you know which RAF units manned the boats?
My father wa based in Edderton and worked at Meikle ferry but never was an engineer. Before the war he was a deck officer and knew about boats and navigation.

[Administratr - The unit was No. 5 Air Sea Rescue Unit. A picture link has been added to a plaque presented to the museum by veterans of this unit]

Ref my previous comment on 189, I have looked more closely at another 3 pages which give details of RAF Pinnaces. They were in a batch numbered from 1200 to 1399. One of your pictures mentions Pinnace 251 and this one shows 261. Perhaps your 251 should be 1251 which would put it in the Pinnace bracket and this picture and the vessel at speed certainly look like the Pinnace in a picture I would like to send you.
