Colour photograph taken from the tower of Dornoch Cathedral, looking to the east. The Old School building on School Hill can be seen left middle distance with the prominent gable end. Further right in the far distance is Abden which became Ross House, with its turret. The Royal Golf Hotel can be seen on the skyline centre right, beyond the grassed area on which the Dornoch Police station was subsequently built. In centre foreground is the rooftop of the Masonic Lodge. (See comments below which led to correction of the original description which incorrectly names Abden as 'The Grange')

I'm confused by the references, in the text above, to "The Grange" and the Royal Golf Hotel being two separate buildings. My understanding is that they are one and the same, and that the property referred to above as "The Grange" was in fact originally named "Abden". See, for example, Item no. 4408, reference 2005-001-12 on this website, which quotes the recollections of a daughter of Robert Hamilton Bruce about the building of both The Grange and Abden.
Comment left on 24 October 2012 at 15:10 by David MacLean Grateful for the two observations above, revealing error in the description for this image. In an attempt to 'set the scene' of this photograph, those composing the museum catalogue detail got it wrong! If there is any excuse the error arose from incorrect annotations of 'The Grange' attributed to images of Abden in the museum collection (see picture #5570 and picture #5584). A postcard at picture #21 has printed annotation which firmly establishes what was Abden, later to become Ross Hostel and then Ross House. We have now corrected the description on this picture page and those at 5570 and 5584 and the catalogue record for these images. TThis provides a prime example of the value of comments received via the Image Library. We will retain the comments leading to the corrections. Administrator
