Seaforth Highlanders sporran
Sporran with plain white metal mount, made of brown horsehair with two paler tassels with plain conical white metal mounts, all on a leather backing with a gusseted pouch with flap closure. Also on the back are two leather loops and two small metal rings. Written on the back: Col Sergt W A Bethune 5th Seaforth High Bonar Bridge.
This was given with the uniform of a Colour Sergeant Instructor of 1st Sutherland Highland Rifle Volunteers between 1881 and 1908, which belonged to William Bethune of Bonar Bridge. Photos of the Sutherland HRV show them wearing sporrans without tassels, whereas the Seaforth sporrans have two tassels, so this sporran may be later than 1908, which is when the HRV became the 5th (Sutherland) Battalion Seaforth Highlanders.
