Interesting names from the past...
It is not said where Old School, School Hill was/is. However, I see from the 1901 census that a John Moyes aged 45 was living in the School House in Embo School with his wife and four children and gave his occupation as "Certified teacher". He was born in Dunfermline, Fife. His wife Margaret Moyes aged 41 years and was an "own account" (self employed?) "Certified Maternity Nurse" in Embo. She was bilingual (Gaelic and English) and was born in Argyle. They had children Chrissie (aged 15 born in Orkney), May (aged 12 born in Dornoch), Daisy (aged 7 born in Dornoch) and Hamish I K (aged 4 and also born in Dornoch). So with the three youngest children being born in Dornoch Mr Moyes would have probably been a teacher there at the times of their births.
I had an aunt Margaret Mackay who was born in Embo in 1901 and who was always known as "Maggie Moyes" after nurse Margaret Moyes who delivered her.
It then seems certain that the Mr John (James) Moyes refered to by WJ Ashton was the same person who taught at Embo school in 1901. It would be interesting to know if the Hamish I K Moyes mentioned was WJ Ashton's grandfather.
I did hear some years ago that the Moyes children eventually settled in Edinburgh but that may not be true.

My grandmother was Chrissie Moyes who was born in Sourin where her father was the schoolmaster. She married a farmer in Perthshire, David Whyte.
May and Daisy moved to Dunfermline. Hamish, I believe was a teacher at a school near Buckie. The youngest, Margaret was married in Dornoch Cathedral and moved to Nairn with her husband George Borwick.
My great grandmother Margaret Moyes nee McLeod was born near Glengorm Castle in Mull and did some nursing training in Glasgow where she was also in domestic service. Her family was gaelic speaking and the last family member I know of to have some gaelic is my mother.
